The novel shows the life, way of life, the interests of the nobility, an attempt to find the answer to the question: what is the meaning of life? Is the ideal of life in the bustle of the capital's nobility?

The line, his evaluative view of some actions exist on their own, regardless of the opinion of the protagonist. The author fills the pages of the novel with unusual lyricism with his presence. He is the same full-fledged character with his own character, worldview, moral values. Intervention in the plot is organic, justified and does not distort the development of the plot.
