This work does not have common characters with the previous books of Murakami, although they have similar images and plots. At the beginning of the Chronicle, the protagonist leaves the law firm, where he was an “errand boy”. He lives on some kind of savings, money left by his parents and what Kumiko’s wife earns (she works in the journal “On Healthy Eating”).
Strange events begin to happen to the hero. In the absence of a working wife, a woman calls, trying to have telephone sex with the hero. Favorite cat disappears. He meets a sixteen-year-old neighbor's daughter with extrasensory abilities (see, this type of road is an aging writer). Two more psychics appear - Malta Kano and her sister Krita Kano (former prostitute). They, at the request of the hero’s wife, are involved in the search for the cat.
Kumiko herself suddenly disappears. She leaves a message to the hero, in which she reports that she has been dating her lover for three months, since she has not received satisfaction from her husband (despite all the love for him). Such a tragedy.
Brother Kumiko, the famous television analyst and conservative rising star, appears. In The Chronicles, he carries an extremely important semantic load, manifesting Evil. In “Dance, dance, dance” evil was “developed capitalism” itself (Haruka's former belonging to the hippy world affected). Now Evil is a kind of reactionary force bearing plans for seizing power. In this sense, Wataya is an analogue of the Sheep.
Noburu Wataya demands to give Kumiko a divorce. But the hero feels that she fell into the black networks of the pervert brother, and seeks to return her.
Along the way, the text contains significant inserts. Dedicated to the Japanese occupation of China and the war with the USSR at Khalkhin Gol and in 1945 (this claim to polyphony could have been dispensed with).
Then he meets another woman (and also a psychic) who introduces him to the extrasensory craft (extrasensory abilities erupted in the hero while sitting in a dry well - apparently, a symbol of the bosom of a great mother). In general, the spirit of the hero collides with the spirit of Noburu Watai and cripples him with a baseball bat. Accordingly, the real villain himself is in the hospital. There Kumiko finishes him, punishing for his ruined life and love. She shines for a minimum period. The hero is going to wait for her. That is, having made a "titanic effort", it returns to its usual state.
